Thank you, Kealan Patrick Burke!

When I checked the mail today, I was thrilled to see a package from Kealan Patrick Burke containing a signed limited hardcover of his book, Kin, published by Cemetery Dance!

I’d won it in a contest by being subscribed to his newsletter, which I highly recommend. I’ll sign up to a lot of newsletters and eventually unsubscribe because they hit my inbox too hard, but Kealan is moderate with his mailings and always interesting. There is a box to subscribe on his website and he’s an excellent author, so give it a shot! If you’re unfamiliar with his work, I think you’ll be impressed.

As for his book, Kin, Cemetery Dance always puts out quality books, and this is no exception. It looks superb and I can’t wait to dig in! I’m sure it’s a worthy investment, and there were only 750 copies printed, so grab one while you can!

When “experts” are wrong

With the publishing industry, it is often best to listen to those who have more experience, even if you don’t agree with them at first. There are a number times, however, when they are flat-out wrong. Here is an example:

I keep hearing or reading about how literary agents shout “No more vampires!” They feel that, after Twilight, readers are getting sick of vampires and don’t want them anymore.

However, KHP’s best selling title, William Meikle’s Eldren, has vampires. Also, K.H. Koehler’s A Clockwork Vampire is doing quite well since its release. How could that be? I’ll tell you.

People still love vampires as monsters. Scary vampires, not emo. In fact, after Twilight, the monster vampires are a breath of fresh air. Readers have a new appreciation for a creature that instead of stalking a teenager in search of love, would rather stalk one for food.

So if you have a great – scary – vampire story in you, don’t let a few agents tell you it’s unmarketable. Write it. Bloodsuckers are still cool so long as they don’t drink… whine.

Sarah Michelle Gellar promoting Literacy

This is so awesome. Sarah Michelle Gellar (of Buffy fame) has teamed up with Nestle to encourage reading with kids. I agree that it is extremely important. It may seem harder to “make” the time these days with all the multi-tasking and with the kids having so much to look at on TV, computers, etc, but taking just a few minutes to sit down and read to them can go a long way in bonding and their development.
